PrintMU women’s athletics distinguished itself with two recent achievements. Last season’s MU softball team set an academic standard, and the MU women’ basketball team learned an incoming freshman player earned a notable high school award.
During the spring 2008 semester, the Missouri softball team combined for a 3.37 grade-point average, marking the highest team GPA for the softball team since the start of the program in 1975. The previous best record was a 3.33 in 2006.
Eighteen of Missouri’s 20-woman roster earned a 3.0 GPA or higher and 12 individuals were named to the dean’s list. Andee Allen, the Tigers’ starting second baseman, finished her junior year with a 4.0 GPA.
Allen and teammates Katie Milles, Amanda Renth, Gina Schneider and Julie Silver were awarded first-team academic All-Big 12 honors.
In the spring, the team practiced in the afternoons until about 5 p.m. every day but Monday. Schneider said she got most of her studying done on Mondays, the team’s off day, but she also studied every night after practice and dinner.
“It is a great feeling to know we have a lot of hard working girls on the team, on and off the field,” Schneider said.
The Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission in Kansas named Baily Gee, an incoming freshman for the Tigers’ women’s basketball team, the Lynette Woodard Female High School Athlete of the Year on Friday. A panel of sports writers and broadcasters selected Gee based on her “high school athletic career, academics, character, work ethic, dedication, commitment and effort.”
Gee helped Andover Central High School to a perfect 26-0 record and the Kansas Class 4A state title. The Kansas Basketball Coaches Association named her the 2008 Miss Kansas Basketball. She also earned a spot on the All-State Big Six team, which recognizes the top six players in the state.
In addition to her basketball achievements, Gee also earned all-league first-team honors in volleyball in 2005 and 2006 and finished seventh in the high jump at the state meet in 2005, 2006, and 2007.
