CAPE GIRARDEAU — A former Southeast Missouri State University employee was recently found with university data files containing the names and Social Security numbers of about 800 students, the university said in a news release.

Students were notified of the problem in a letter dated June 19.

“The university takes its obligation to safeguard your information seriously, and we have established internal security policies and procedures to ensure that high levels of security are in place,” said Dennis Holt, vice president for administration and enrollment management.

“We deeply regret the concern and inconvenience to you caused by this incident.”

The university news release said the former employee, who was not identified, left the university with the information. Holt said the discovery was made by the Office of Information Technology while activity logs were being reviewed.

Holt said the data was recovered, and formal charges have been filed in the state where the former employee now lives.
