2 Tigers earn All-America honors at NCAA Track and Field Championships

Sophomore Nick Adcock and freshman Lars Rise finished strong and gained All-America honors in the decathlon on day 2 of the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Thursday at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.

Adcock placed fourth with a total of 7,612 points, and Rise finished in seventh place with 7,534 points in a field of 21 competitors.

They competed in the 110-meter hurdles, the discus throw, the pole vault, the javelin throw and the 1500-meter run. On Wednesday, they completed the 100-meter dash, the long jump, the shot put, the high jump and the 4000-meter dash.

Senior Nate Englin qualified for the men’s shot put finals Saturday after placing in the top 12 with a distance of 60 feet, 4 inches. Englin was accepted into the at-large selection pool for the event after at least two people who placed above him in the regional scratched. Englin also won the Big 12 Conference Championship this year in the indoor and outdoor men’s shot put.

Senior Shernelle Nicholls placed 13th in the shot put. Nicholls fell short of qualifying for the final with a throw of 52 feet, 6.75 inches. She also competed in the qualifying round for the discus throw Wednesday.

Krishna Lee placed 21st in the qualifying round for the shot put after she threw 50 feet. The top 12 thowers advanced to the final. Lee had also competed in qualifying rounds Wednesday for the hammer throw.

Sophomore Brian Hancock will compete in the final for the men’s pole vault event.

Final rounds for events will take place Friday and Saturday.
