The need for volunteers at the Special Olympics Missouri 2007 State Summer Games has decreased by half since Friday.
According to Mandi Mueller, public relations coordinator, about 300 volunteer slots are still needed. (A volunteer slot is a four-hour shift.) In all, the organization needed 1000 volunteer slots filled.
“We are doing much better,” Mueller said. “A lot of people have come in to volunteer, but there are still 270 shifts open, which is doable, but still tight.”
Currently, the biggest need for volunteers is Wednesday morning for the track and field competitions being held at Stankowski Field on the MU campus.
SOMO recently sent messages to its e-mail lists to inform people of the need, but that’s not the only reason Mueller thinks volunteer numbers have increased.
“Some people might have been waiting until after Memorial Day to plan their next week,” she said.
