John Carpenter
John Carpenter of Columbia died Wednesday, May 28, 2008, at his daughter’s home. He was 87.
Mr. Carpenter was born on Feb. 6, 1921, in Camden to Frank and Ellen (Murphy) Carpenter.
He was married to Frances Knowles on June 10, 1940, in Lexington.
Mr. Carpenter served in the U.S. Navy for 32 months during World War II and was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars #280 and the American Legion Post 202 in Columbia. He worked for the Railroad Retirement Board in St. Louis for 32 years until his retirement in 1976.
Mr. Carpenter enjoyed traveling, fishing, golfing and eating out with friends.
He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Cheryl Lindahl of Columbia; a sister, Fleta Patterson of Independence; and several nieces and nephews.
Two brothers and two sisters died earlier.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Memorial Funeral Home, 1217 Business Loop 70 W. in Columbia. Services with military honors will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be at a later date in Camden.
Memorial contributions may be sent to a charity of the donor’s choice.
