COLUMBIA — Helen Patricia Adams died Wednesday, May 21, 2008, at The Bluffs. She was 91.
She was born April 27, 1917, in Dike County, Texas, to Elisha Edmond Murray and Anna Mae Hooker.
The sixth of nine children, Mrs. Adams grew up in southern Oklahoma and later moved to Tampico, Ill., where she met her husband, Bernard Adams. They married on July 5, 1944, at Camp Polk, La.
Mr. Adams was sent to fight overseas in World War II a few months after the wedding, and Mrs. Adams moved back to Tampico to await his return and the birth of their first child.
After the war, the Adamses bought a farm outside of Tampico where Mrs. Adams became an accomplished seamstress. She also was active as a 4-H leader, a member of the Ladies of Sodality and the Farm Bureau Women.
A move to mid-Missouri in 1959 allowed Mrs. Adams to capitalize on her seamstress skills. Until her retirement, she ran her own business as a seamstress, creating draperies and reupholstering furniture.
Mr. and Mrs. Adams were also involved in Sacred Heart Church, where they served as coordinators of the Nursing Home Ministry Program in Columbia.
Mrs. Adams is survived by a son, Randy Adams of Columbia; a daughter, Dorothy Burke of Columbia; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a brother, Nathan Murray of Duncan, Okla.
Her husband, a son, Stephen, three sisters and four brothers died earlier.
