Esther Seaman

COLUMBIA — Esther Seaman made time to be kind to the people around her, even strangers.
“She was the person who baked cookies for a neighbor when they were sick,” said her daughter, Marjorie Bay. “She was always very loving and caring, even if she didn’t know the person.”
Mrs. Seaman of Columbia died Saturday, April 26, 2008. She was 98.
She was born Oct. 3, 1909, in Philadelphia to Robert and Florence Hammond.
She graduated from Pierce Business College in Philadelphia and later became the executive secretary at Fidelity Philadelphia National Bank and Trust Company. While working there, she met her husband, Charles A. Seaman.
Her family remembers her active lifestyle and love for knitting, dancing and playing cards.
Mrs. Seaman was active at Sherwood Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia as president of the women’s group, a member of Church Circle and the Mothers’ Sunday school class. She was also a Brownie Girl Scout leader. She was an Eastern Star Matron and 50 year member of St. Albans chapter in Philadelphia and a member of Boone Chapter 290 OES.
In Columbia, she was a member of the First Baptist Church.
“She had a tremendous amount of energy,” Bay said.
She is survived by two daughters; Marjorie Bay of Columbia, and Beverly Maurer of Wilmington, N.C.; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Visitation will begin at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Parker Funeral Service, 22 N. Tenth St. Services will follow at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Arlington Cemetery in Philadelphia. Online tributes can be posted at parkerfuneralservice.com.
